Just a programming note: Because of the holiday and because of transporting my son downtown for the Tulsa Boy Singers appearance on KOTV Tuesday morning, my weekly conversation with Gwen Freeman and Chris Medlock was postponed until Wednesday morning. I'll be on at 7:40, and there will be all sorts of local issues to discuss, including the Council's vote on immigration policy and the failure to land the Big 12 basketball tournament until 2013 at the earliest.

Let's get real for a moment. Tulsa is not going to get the Big Twelve tournament. Between the "conference cities" in the Big 12 (Dallas, Kansas City, and OKC), and maybe Houston and St. Louis, we will not compete well based on population alone.
We are not a transport hub and that is a convenience issue for anyone who wants to come to an event from out of town.
We are left with music (a subject I am not qulaified to comment on) and events we create here in Tulsa.
Here's one idea. Getting OU and OSU here for a basketball event is not likely unless they are guaranteed not to play each other. getting one of them in alternating years could happen. So why not have an us against the world holiday tournament. TU, ORU, Arkansas, OU?OSU?, versus four outside teams. the big twelve and sec sould not automatically be eliminated from accepting if we just say participants from those conferences would not play each other. An eight team holdiay event could be attractive. Each team plays two games over a four day period.
Something like this was mentioned wednesday morning and I think it would work. Mayor Taylor could even hoist the first jump ball in the opening game. She's got to be better than the bald refs that do it now.
